THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary:  Though the recent heat wave seemed to surprise a lot of people, it was really right on schedule. Hot September days and balmy nights made for some good nocturnal fishing.  The water is looking much better than it has since spring.

STRIPED BASS:  Plenty of schoolies in San Pablo Bay to keep you occupied until the larger fish materialize. No real hot spots to speak of but good prospects from San Quentin to China Camp and Point Pinole through Rodeo.  Shrimp baits or lures like hair raisers or Rat-L-Traps.

STURGEON:  Napa River or Carquinez Strait.

PERCH: Good black perch fishing from the rocks all over the East Bay on pile worms.  Barred perch are available on grubs south of the Gate; redtail to the north.   But they are not big or in large numbers.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Salmon are in the bays.  Crowds have started to mass at Rodeo and Benicia and there are some fish caught on the standard spinners like Flying C with a chartreuse skirt.  Nothing spectacular, but that is subject to change at any moment.  Halibut diehards or hopefuls might try Tiburon or brave the cliffs of the Marin Headlands.  Jacksmelt are out and about by the north tower or Pacifica.  Sharks and rays are still in the bays and also the estuaries and lagoons.
