THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary:  May was full of muttering.  Will June bring on the smiles or early doldrums?

STRIPED BASS:  Still a good at Berkeley Pier on live bait so long as there is two or three feet above the mean depth.  Pluggers are finding bass at San Quentin and Loch Lomond on the high tides, and at Fort Point on the start of the outgoing.  Hair raisers and rattling lures are effective.   The surf has some nice fish when the water is less churning, on baits and lures.   Look for the cars.

STURGEON:  Carquinez Strait!  Shrimp baits are good at C&H, Eckley, and Port Costa in the middle of the incoming tide.  Also check out Montezuma Slough when the water is slacking.

PERCH: April 1 marks the closure for perch fishing (save for shiners) inside the bays until August 1.  Grubbing is very good now along any sandy beach, with 1.5" motoroil leading the way for some dandy barred and redtail perch.  Bait is not as effective.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Pessimism is eroding even the most upbeat veterans at Berkeley Pier.  Where the hell are the halibut?  One theory says they are late, not to worry, they still have to spawn, and the cold weather has merely stalled the process.  Other opinions blame the bridge work, all that pile driving and incessant pounding, for spooking the flatties.  In any event, it has been disappointing so far, and even the boats are coming up shorter than usual.  But keep hope alive at least into the first two weeks of June.  Some fish are getting caught, about one every other day.  So you could be the fortunate one.  Not much happening for jacksmelt around the bay.   Sharks and rays are holding forth for those who want to put down funky bait in the late afternoons and nights.  Anywhere will do.
