THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary:  Ain't no cure for the summertime blues in the East Bay.  For that matter, almost anywhere between the three bridges.  Go upriver or out the Gate.

STRIPED BASS:  Big night tides and no moon.  Think dark poppers and bombers. Good things are already going on by day along the beaches from Baker's Beach and as far down as Half Moon Bay.  Fresh bait is key.  San Pablo Bay has some hair raiser action available in the evenings along the San Rafael shores

STURGEON:  No information.

PERCH: April 1 marks the closure for perch fishing (save for shiners) inside the bays until August 1.  Finally there is decent  grubbing action on the surf again.  The numbers and sizes aren't spectacular and there are walleyes everywhere, but hey it's something.  Barred perch to the south of the Gate, redtails to the north.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Still a good amount of live bait (anchovies, smelt, shiners) available for cast netters and sabiki riggers.  But halibut are hard to find from shore.  Boats are doing drifts around South Hampton, so maybe Paradise and Tiburon might work.  Or go down to Santa Cruz.  Big bat rays are out and about these days and you can see them swimming a foot below the surface in the marinas.  They are common on the hook for fish or squid offerings.  Small smoothhounds are a pain in the Berkeley Flats at night.  Try leopards by day off the rockwalls.  Salmon fishing opens up past the I-80 Bridge as of...now...so keep that in mind and look for a clear path in the water.  Remember the hook and size restrictions west of the bridge.
