THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary: The Bay System is looking very healthy these days and spring is near.  Follow the tides.

STRIPED BASS:  Some rather large stripers have been landed in the Suisun and Carquinez where the sloughs or rivers enter the big waters.  Bullheads are the top bait, with some luck on cut baits or pile worms.   Shrimp baits are picking up schoolies between China Camp and Point Pinole.  Also some action reported at Sonoma and Petaluima rivers on a variety of offerings.  It ain't much but it's better than it has been for a while.

STURGEON:  Fast tides turned on the bite--somewhat--at China Camp and the usual haunts in the North Bay.  McNear's and Point Pinole piers are a fair bet right now. Pretty slow in the Carquinez but that's due to the difficult angling conditions with fast tides and water runoff.  But the fish are there.   A smallish herring spawn in the South Bay produced some diamondbacks these last few days, especially around Oyster Point and down to Dumbarton. No word on Alameda lately and that in itself is strange.

PERCH: Despite rolling tides the action has been good along the rocks from Emeryville to Richmond for frisky black perch.   Striped perch are all over the two towers of the Gate.  Barred and rubberlip have yet to make an appearance in the Bay but the spawn is nigh.   Redtail, barred, and striped perch are getting picked up all over the surf from Pescadero up to Point Reyes, mostly by baiters and also by grubbers.  Right now the top offering is grass shrimp followed by pile worms.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Kingfish on the piers at mid incoming and jacksmelt from the rocks on low tide. Curt baits and worms. Rockfish and lings consistent before the water heads out again. Squid strips and whole anchovies or plastics.  No halibut at Crissy Field yet.
