THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
Summary: Bridge work continues to gum things up in the Central Bay but conditions are beautiful beyond the Gate. Lots of bait on the surf.
STRIPED BASS:
Most of the good sized stripers can be found on the surf from Baker Beach
down to Thornton, and again from Sunset to Seacliff beaches in Monterey
Bay. Poppers, hard iron, and even swimbaits are working. Tailor
your lures to the weather and swells. Or throw out baited rigs and
be patient. Some nice fish available to the early risers.
If you can't travel far, there are still some straggler schoolies, coming
and going, scattered about the bays, with the usual haunts putting out
a fish every now and again on hair raisers or pile worms. Rodeo,
China Camp, San Quentin, and even the Berkeley Flats are seeing a few fish.
STURGEON:
Same old same old for this time of year. Hardly anyone thinks to
fish for sturgeon. Boaters are finding them by the Mothball Fleet and inside
Montezuma Slough, but other than that, pretty slow.
PERCH: Pogies
are in the house. Some dandy black perch are close to the rocks
from Emeryville to Richmond and pile worms are almost a sure bet.
Move around. Across the Bay there are striped perch on the same bait
at both towers of the Gate. Out on the surf, despite all the weeds,
you can pick up smallish barred perch on grubs south of the Gate, along
with walleyes, and striped perch on bait. North will see redtails
on artificials and the ubiquitous walleyes, and also some striped and silver
perch on bait.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Got the right tides for halibut plugging on the surf this week. Try Muir, Baker, Montara, and Seacliff. Inside, sharks and rays abide. Salmon are slowly working through, but don't expect them to linger so long as the water is funky.
