THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary: Try to get out before Noon and find a spot with a good mean depth.  Winds are mean these days.  The good news is that the water is clearing up and slowing down from the spring runoff. But all that rain has produced some tall weeds for snakes and ticks, and thick patches of poison oak, so be forewarned if you like to fish off the beaten paths.  Set your clock ahead this Sunday morning.

STRIPED BASS: Same story as last week with more fish in the picture.  Current good spots are Martinez from the pier to the SP tracks, and then all the down between Candlestick Park and Coyote Point.   Live baits are good in the south; shrimp baits are working upriver.  Golden Gate Fields and Marina Bay have schoolies on worms when the tide is up and just starting to move out.

STURGEON:  Martinez Pier has some good fishing on shrimp baits now.  Pick the incoming tide.  Also check out Montezuma Slough, Port Costa, Emeryville behind the restaurant, and even  Bay farm Island.

PERCH: April 1 marks the closure for perch fishing (save for shiners) inside the bays until August 1.  Pretty rough on the surf lately though San Gregario is consistent on baits and grubs. .

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Small sharks and rays plague the bays right now.  No sign of the bigger guys unless you are in the channels of the south bay.  Jacksmelt are at the piers on the incoming tide. Halibut are scarce at Berkeley but making appearances below Candlestick Point. Shiners are still hard to come by.   Rockfish are off the table until May 1.  Then lingcod will be limited to one per day at a minimum size of 30 inches.
