THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

Summary: Minus tides in the morning, winds in the afternoon.  Any questions?  Go deep or get out of the Bay.

STRIPED BASS: No change, except to say that throwing dark popper-type lures is a good idea while the moon is absent from the night sky.  The fishing is so much better on the beaches than the bays that it's unwise to go anywhere else.  Baker Beach is good on cut baits or plastics.  So is the stretch along the Great Highway.  If you are in the mood for a nice drive, there are big stripers scattered from Santa Cruz to Monterey and they are taking anchovy-colored artificials.

STURGEON:  No report this week.  The dedicated year-rounders haven't been able to find the big fish lately.

PERCH: The perch closure is done in the Bay, and it's about time. Some nice striped perch are available at Fort Baker and on the beaches.  Lots of walleyed around Berkeley Pier.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Salmon are heading into the bays right now, though it has tapered somewhat.  But it does not seem to be bothering the sea lions hovering by Yellow Bluff.  Best shots are  still Point Cavallo at Fort Baker on Mepps or Blue Fox in size 5, or again at Rodeo on similar spinners.  Same thing at Benicia, though they have yet to arrive in substantial numbers.  Get moving now and avoid the crowds.   Halibut are scarce from the shoreline in the Bay.  Rays are anything but scarce and all over, from South Bay all the way to Pinole Shores.  Kingfish are in Richmond.  So are jacksmelt.
