THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
STRIPED BASS: Get ready! Striped bass are all over the Marin side from Paradise to San Quentin, and then The Sisters. Problem is, they are yet to get close to shore and are eating all those shiners, bullheads, and pinheads that Mother Nature is offering them. But you can still get them if you work the piers and deeper channels. Throw lures at San Quentin Point, Point Pinole, and Crockett. Soak bullheads at Point Pinole, Rodeo, Crockett, and Port Costa. All these places have seen some nice stripers in recent days. And there are still more outside the Gate. maybe the World Series bite that people are bemoaning hasn't happened because the World Series is still weeks away.
STURGEON:
A little more jumping and a little catching going on this past week.
Rodeo is still a good choice. So is Eckley Pier and up through Pittsburg.
PERCH:
When the water is low in the morning and the winds come swooping down ion
the afternoon.. well, you know what to expect. It's still the same
old story, one black perch at a time in the East Bay. Best bets are
across the water at Muni Pier or even the downtown piers in the Embarcadero.
Surf fishing is spotty lately but you can still get some large striped
and redtail perch north of Fort Cronkhite if you get up early and start
the incoming tide.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Halibut fishing is pretty good from a boat, not all that exciting from the shore. You have to hunt for them, and that means it's more practical to take out lures like hair raisers and Rat-L-Traps, and do some patrolling. Remember, lots of bait in the water means you have to present something irresistible, so casual angling ain't gonna make it. Keep it moving! They are still around. Salmon fishing seems to be concentrated on the other side of the I-80 Bridge, with Dillon Point and Benicia being the usual suspects. Spinners all. Rodeo and Crockett see jumpers but not much in the way of biters. Sharks and rays are still available on the outgoing at Berkeley Pier and pretty much gone elsewhere. Kingfish are all over and bountiful at the end of Harbor Way in Richmond. Jacksmelt are at GG Fields on the low tide.
