THE
WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary: Finally, hot temperatures inland! stripers should be pouring down river soon, and the Delta's crummy Spring Run just might be our horn of plenty. We might even get a break and experience the more comprehensible winds of summer, rather than these relentless gusts of ill nature. Get up early, get moving, put your feet up in the afternoon, and then go out again at dusk.
STRIPED BASS:
They are moving through the bays right now and you have to find them when
you can. In recent days they have been caught (mostly on lures like
hair raisers or Kastmasters) at Loch Lomond, San Quentin Point, and Elephant
Rock, with a small flurry of activity at Butler's Beach in Richmond and
Rodeo when there is water (early morning).
STURGEON: No
change. Not much going on. But they are definitely in the Carquinez
and Montezuma Slough.
PERCH:
April 1 through July 31 marks the closure of perch fishing within the boundaries
of the SF and SP Bays. Better on the
surf than it has been, but still hardly worth the trip until the summer
wind pattern takes hold.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Good shark fishing is going on south of the 'Stick. Find water, throw out fishy bait. Rays continue to haunt the shallows just about anywhere. Some salmon are coming through the Gate now. Halibut is a slow process due to crummy tides, but should rebound this week. Try hair raisers close to the rocks, or live bait on the piers.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants this week at Phoenix, Del Valle, Chabot, Contra
Loma, and Shadow Cliffs. Not much change for the rainbow fish. Still
good fishing for trout right now. Powerbaits (rainbow, chartreuse)
reign supreme, followed by the processed meat fad baits (Crave, Predator),
and then the old reliable marshmallow combos, either nightcrawlers or salmon
eggs. Lures include Rapala, Kastmaster, and Krocodile varieties;
movement and flash are the important things to keep in mind. Black
bass fishing slowed to a crawl, though buzz baits might get them moving
early in the morning. Panfish have taken off and it's time for the
redworm/bobber setups for some nice bluegill and red ear. Catfish
have also been turned on by the warm weather and are hitting cut fishy
baits like mackerel and sardines, as well as nightcrawlers.
DELTA RUMORS:
The lousy weather during the Memorial Day weekend still has baitshop owners
and anglers griping, and with good cause. It's been a terrible Spring
Run for striped bass. Still, the recent turning of the seasons is
a boon. Hot days are exactly what we need to get the stripers moving
down river. If the winds are kind--even if they are not--the next
week will tell a different tale as more fish are caught as they pass through
the system. Best strategy is to take along a variety of lures and
some frozen baits and try to work in water about 15-20 feet deep.
If you can find live bait, even better. If you run into pesky little
stripers, move.
Sturgeon fishing
is about right for this time of the year, slow and somewhat steady in the
deeper sloughs or waterways, like Cache Slough or the Sacramento River
below Decker Island. Nothing to get excited about, but they are around.
Panfish are now the top prospect in the Delta, so try redworms or minnows
by the tules or boat docks. Lots of good sizes coming in. Catfish,
too, are breaking loose with the warm weather, and mackerel leads the list
of favorite baits.
