THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

                                 {http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary: Much better fishing all around than it has been for some time.  Target your fish, catch your fish.

STRIPED BASS: When the tide is closing in, Ashby/Frontage Road and Marina bay are two good spots, with blood worms doing the bet.  From Rodeo to Point Molate, there are some stripers roving and bullheads or lures might catch them.  But it's a hit-and-mostly-miss proposition.  Better luck is over at Loch Lomond on a variety of fishy baits as well as hair raisers and Rat-L-Traps.  On the surf, when it's hot, it's hot, especially from Princeton to Pacifica, with a light action occurring every now and again along the Great Highway.  Mostly lures (Poppers and Bombers) but a cut sardine will do the job.

STURGEON: Unchanged. The best chance is still in the Carquinez Strait from Eckley Pier to Ozol Pier.

PERCH: The season is open again in the bay, and the pogies are cooperating nicely.  Pile worms will do the job, right when the low tide turns over.  Pick a place with a good depth, say a mean 6 feet or better, and bounce a hi/lo rig from about 20 feet out until you get perilously close to the rocks.  You will score.  Five fish limits are easy to come by all over the east bay.  Pile perch and striped perch are also in the mix, with the latter more likely on the SF or Marin sides.  On the surf, it's moslty about striped perch, with the occasional silver or barred to break up the monotony.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Last month the DFG made unwitting criminals out of millions of anglers.  Greenling and Cabezon fishing was closed for the rest of the year and there were no public notices issued, only a short blurb online that was not available via direct link.  And for those without computers, tough.   Halibut are at Alameda and Crissy Field.  Best results are live bait or on artificials; some large guys are getting bagged on trout color swimbaits.

FRESHWATER:  No DFG plants this week.  EBRPD channel catfish plants at Temescal, Contra Loma Del Valle, Chabot, and Shadow Cliffs.   Hot weather kills the trout bite except for very early morning or at dusk--for that matter, that's the story for the other species, too, unless you fish within the fog zone.  August=doldrums in freshwater, save for catfish.

DELTA RUMORS: Salmon are the big item lately, with small numbers rolling throughout he system, especially between the Rio Vista and Isleton bridges, and then some up by Walnut Grove.  The best lures are Wiggle Warts, Apex, Blue Fox, and Mepps.  Take all of them along and be mobile.  Not a huge run yet, but the big slugs are coming.   Striped bass in big sizes continue to haunt Sherman Island, and this week's top bait is whole frozen shad fished drift style.  Other fishy offerings will work.  Biggest problems are the small stripers and crabs.  But perseverence--and a good windbreaker--can win the day.  It's hot and windy, so be prepared.  Black bass is a pretty decent prospect early morning on top water offerings like frogs or white buzzbaits, especially Speedtraps  During the middle of the day, flipping worms could be the way to go, with junebugs and curly tails working the best.  Spinnerbaits have also pulled up some largemouth recently.   Otherwise, it's the night thing, and catfish are available in splendid numbers and sizes.  Clams, mackerel, chicken liver all rule the roost.
