THE
WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary: When the wind comes up and the whitecaps are a big as glaciers, what are you going to do? Hang in there. Going deep and mustering lots of patience can get you a decent fish. And there's always freshwater, lately a great refuge from the old skunk.
STRIPED BASS: When there is water, the best spot has been Marina Bay with blood worms, grass shrimp, or pile worms in about that order. Point Isabel is where you should go when the water is low, especially at the bottom of the tide. Otherwise, berkeley Pier has been turning them out at the end on live baits, and in good sizes too. And more are heading down from the delta each day. If things materialize the way they portend, then May and June could be two very nice months for Bay striped bass.
STURGEON: Go to the Delta. Or try Bayfarm Island in Alameda.
PERCH: April 1 through July 31 marks the closure of perch fishing within the boundaries of the SF and SP Bays. No point on the surf.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: Bat rays are in Emeryville and, to a lesser extent, spread out
over the East Bay shoreline. So are sharks, though small yet. Halibut
fishing was turned down a notch by the winds and tides, which, alas, will
be pretty bad this next week: no water in the morning. Berkeley Pier
or Crissy Field, but don't expect much. However, you can catch anchovies
at local piers, and they are good for stripers right now. Jacksmelt
appear on the lowest part of the outgoing tide.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants this week at Contra Loma, Chabot, Shadow Cliffs, Bon
Tempe, and Lagunitas. Virtually the same report as last week. Successive
plantings are a real shot in the arm and trout fishing is rated good everywhere.
Limits are common, especially for early risers. Powerbait in rainbow
and chartreuse are still the top all around baits for trout, with nightcrawlers
and spoons coming close behind. Black bass are hitting crankbaits
and plastics, as well as baits like nightcrawlers. Still a little
too cold for Catfish are taking worms, chicken livers, and anchovies.
All in all, a good time to be working the banks at a freshwater location.
DELTA RUMORS:
Stripers are frisky and doing their thing. Milky males and egg bound
females are common, so use a little common sense and compassion when you
are plucking them out of the water. Good spots in the past week have
been the Isleton Bridge down to Rio Vista, and then the adjacent sloughs,
like Georgiana and Three Mile. Also some decent catches on the Mokelumne
River above and below Terminous. Early fishing is best and blood
worms, pile worms, live shad and frozen sardines will be fine. Try
broken back type lures, too. Sturgeon are at Cache Slough and Sherman
Island, though often on the opposite banks. Ghost shrimp is the way
to go. Black bass are nesting and you can get them early mornings
or evenings on plastics and cranks. Panfish are hugging structure.
Catfish are in summer style already and mackerel would be the best cut
bait offering.
