THE
WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net.fishing.html}
Summary: Solid foggy mornings have been a blessing for fishing. The bite is most definitely ON.
STRIPED BASS:
Not much change. There is a good chance of getting a striper anywhere in
the Bay/Delta system, now that they have started moving in earnest.
Best prospects would be plugging Rat-L-Traps or hair raisers early morning
in San Pablo Bay, or soaking Bullheads in the Carquinez. But baits
like pile worms and grass shrimp, even cut anchovies, are all taking bass,
usually in the 5# range. Recent semi-hot
spots: Frontage Road, Golden Gate Fields, Point Isabel, Butler's Beach,
and Crockett. You need a decent amount of water everywhere except
Point Isabel, where grass shrimp or pile worms are effective at low tide.
STURGEON: Start working the shore in the Carquinez Strait or head up to the North Delta. Or wait for a good rain. It's still early but signs point to the fish moving.
PERCH:
There are some black perch in the East Bay, but the fishing is very good
from the rocks all over Marin into the Gate. Be aware of security
closures and don't irritate the young soldiers. The surf is improving,
though it's still mostly walleyed and silver perch in the catch.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: Halibut persist in the Berkeley Flats, but at this point
it's boaters and not shoreliners getting them. You can always throw
hair raisers off the rocks at San Quentin or the sands of Crissy Field.
Jacksmelt are best at low tide anywhere in the Bay. Salmon are all over
from Rodeo to Benicia and spinners with chartreuse are doing well.
Only problem is all the other anglers stacked up at the productive locations.
If you don't mind crowds, now is the time to try for that big red meat
fish. Rays and sharks are found in ocean jetties. So are rockfish,
though not in large sizes or numbers.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants at Del Valle, Shadow Cliffs, Lafayette, San Pablo, Chabot
and Bon Tempe. The recent heat wave knocked the fishing back a bit,
but it is slowly rebounding as the fog pours in. Trout are hitting lures
early morning. Try green Kastmasters. Black bass are hitting
top water lures at dawn and plastics after that. Catfish like nightcrawlers
or chicken livers. Stick with small spoons for kokanee.
DELTA RUMORS:
The Sacramento River continues to be clogged with boaters from Rio Vista
to Isleton, and while more anglers means more fish, it's not the most peaceful
scene out there on the weekends. Salmon in good sizes are hitting
the Wiggle Warts (color is not a factor, but availability is) or anything
that rattles and disturbs the water, namely Rat-L-Traps and Blue Fox or
Mepps Spinners. Striped bass are best in North Delta on lures and
pretty fair in the south on bait. However, bait fishermen are getting plagued
with mitten crabs. Sturgeon have been picked up at Sherman Island
and cache Slough, no real surprise there, but also nothing like a hot bite.
Black bass are hitting crankbaits in red and black colors. Crappies
and bluegills are taking redworms and jigs by structures and tules.
And catfish are slamming baits all over the system, with the recent hot
bite in the Bacon Island or Whiskey Slough realms.
