THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}

Summary: Smallish tides calmed down the bite for the last week but that's all changing now as the cycles widen and the water moves faster.   Now is a good time to go after rockfish .

STRIPED BASS:  Try Point Pinole, where small keepers have come in recently on anchovies and pile worms.  Otherwise it's hit-and-miss throughout SF bay and not so great from San Pablo into the Carquinez.  The big schools are in Suisun Bay now and out of reach by land.  But there is a chance from the Antioch Bridge up to Rio Vista.

STURGEON:  Some of the shoreline possibilities are Cache Slough, Montezuma Slough, or Port Costa.  At least, that's where they've been caught recently on grass shrimp.  It's slow but better than nothing.

PERCH:  It's the season for pogies in the East Bay. Also, pile perch.  And, oddly enough, there are some calicos and barred perch filtering through the waters near Brooks Island.  So try Marina Bay and cast out far.  Blood worms for those guys, pile worms and grass shrimp for the others.  Marin and San Francisco spots are good close to the Gate for striped perch and the occasional rubberlipped.   Not much on the surf, but if you brave the rocky cliff areas, you will find some good sizes.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Sharks and rays are still hitting lines at night at Point Pinole and nearby shoreline on San Pablo Bay.  Fishy baits like anchovies seem best.  Jacksmelt are scattered all over SF and SP bays; look for them towards the bottom of the tide.  Some halibut are around but the only shoreline places worth trying would be Crissy Field or past the Gate at Kirby Cove.  Salmon are passing California City now and there may be a decent bite resumed at Rodeo or Benicia.  Benicia is crowded but producing handfuls of salmon every day.  If you don't like crowds, try Crockett.  The action is only fair but there are silver beauties around.  Rockfishing is fair to good outside the Gate.

FRESHWATER:   Trout plants at Bon Tempe, Shadow Cliffs, Chabot, Los Vaqueros, Contra Loma, and Del Valle.  Fishing has picked up slightly in the last week with PowerBait in greens and glitter producing.  Catfish are still active.  Black bass fishing is spotty, best in morning.

DELTA RUMORS: Salmon fishing has tapered off and this is giving everyone time to complain about the mitten crabs.  Are they worse than before?  It's hard to say.  But it's definite that bait fishing is not the way to go unless you are wealthy and don't mind the frustration.  Live bait is slightly better than the usual frozen offerings, but you have to be on your gear at all times.  Use shad in the north and jumbo minnows in the south. Lures are working for striped bass, who have made a push through the system recently.  Rebels, Rapalas, Rat-L-Traps--all are fair for stripers right now.  Black bass are hitting fall color lures, mostly red and black for crankbaits, as well as plastic worms.  Fish early in the morning or at sundown.  Catfish are productive just about everywhere.  Sturgeon are coming around in the deep channels by Cache Slough or at Sherman Island.  Nothing fantastic, but it is a start.
