THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

                                       {http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary:  Cold weather has finally established itself in our realm.  Adjust your fishing accordingly and you will do just fine.

STRIPED BASS:  Point Pinole, Eckley Pier, and the up to Benicia below the 680 Bridge--all these have turned out a few stripers in  recent days.  Bait is a matter of choice, with live whatever being the best to avoid crabs.  You can also try the Marin side of San Pablo Bay for big stragglers.

STURGEON: Same as last week, but improving. They are jumping, especially at river mouths and upriver.  It's a matter of being in the right place at the right time, and these days that means more luck than skill.  The rain has helped get them moving.  Emeryville, Port Costa, or up at Sherman Island or Cache Slough.  These offer the best potential right now.

PERCH:  Berkeley Marina, either the pier or along the rocks, is the place to be in the east bay for black perch on pile worms or grass shrimp.  The surf is still too rough.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Leopard sharks on the Marin side of San Pablo Bay have been hitting mudsuckers and midshipman.  Kingfish are in San Pablo Bay, too.

FRESHWATER:   Trout plants at Los Vaqueros, Shadow Cliffs, Chabot, Del Valle, and Phoenix. Though the recent storms have made the water murky, they have also added needed water to shrinking reservoirs and brought cold weather at last.  So trout fishing is getting better and better.  Best bait is yellow PowerBait followed by marshmallows and nightcrawlers.  Lures like Panther Martin and Kastmasters are also effective.  Catfish hold steady on typical baits.  Black bass fishing is spotty until the water rises over the weed patches.  Panfish are taking redworms.

DELTA RUMORS: Strong winds lately have made the Delta a very tough prospect for the shoreliner.  But if you dress warmly and stick it out, the fish are here.  Striped bass are peppered all over from Sherman Island (on both the San Joaquin and Sacramento sides) up to Rio Vista.  Georgiana Slough and the Mokelumne River are two areas where the wind is less savage.  Sturgeon are meandering down river from Cache Slough to Sherman Island and grass shrimp is the preferred offering.  Not a great fishing situation yet, but it beats working.  South Delta has stripers at Whiskey Slough for pluggers (Rat-L-Traps or similar) and Stockton has them on live mudsuckers.  Catfish are all over and will take grass shrimp and clams right now.  Black bass fishing is slow.
