THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html)
Summary: Have you seen the fog?
That and the afternoon winds are sure signs that the summer is on the way.
All we need is for the surf to relax and take a break on the seashore.
It's so bad lately that the police are shooing people off the beaches.
STRIPED BASS:
There are two spots worth hitting this week. The first is the
area between China Camp and Loch Lomond, where shrimp baits and bullheads
(even cut fish baits like anchovies or sardines) will give you a good chance
for a keeper. The second spot is Montezuma Slough, by the bridge,
in the wee hours. Be careful in the mud and dark, but if you can
get a cast off with a whole anchovy on a hook, be prepared for a good striper.
A day ago a fellow and his lady landed four keepers, 37", 34", 28" and
27" and released them all.
STURGEON:
Except for the mouth of the napa River and a few sporadic bursts at Montezuma
Slough, Carquinez and San Pablo Bay, the sturgeon fishing is pretty slow.
Maybe this will change now that the Closure is ended. Otherwise,
your best bet is to hit the Delta and take advantage of all those wandering
diamondbacks.
PERCH: Very
slow in the East Bay. Hot bite right now is at Fort Point, right
below the bridge, using grass shrimp or pile worms. Limits are not
impossible on striped, rubberlipped, and pile perch. And these fish
are huge!
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: The halibut continue to filter in. A 15# beauty was
pulled in at Marina Green in San Francisco a couple days ago. The
angler was throwing a Rebel. Some smallish halibut are getting caught
in a variety of places, either by accident--hitting lines as fishermen
are reeling in--or by design, when lures are thrown in the sandy areas.
A good showing and a good sign.
FRESHWATER:
Trout planted at Chabot, Temescal, Lafayette, San Pablo, Bon Tempe, and
Phoenix. Nightcrawlers and Green PowerBait have been fair to good
for shoreliners this week.
DELTA RUMORS:
They are hardly even talking about striped bass in the Delta. But
sturgeon fishing has really taken off and is the best choice anywhere.
From Suisun to Steamboat Slough they are catching diamondbacks on ghost
and grass shrimp. Best spots continue to be Steamboat and Cache sloughs,
Isleton Bridge, below Rio Vista, and the power lines at Sherman Island.
Catfish are okay in the slow running sloughs. Black bass have made
a good showing and are taken on spinners, jigs, and crankbaits in about
that order. Best color is chartreuse.
