THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
Summary: Looks like December. Fish as deep and windlessly as possible.
STRIPED BASS: Oddly enough, Point Pinole Pier is the best place to be right now for stripers in the 22-25 inch range. Frozen anchovies are working well. Other adjacent spots to try are Rodeo or Point Molate.
STURGEON: San
Pablo Bay has them in the fabled Sturgeon Triangle, and that means China
camp or McNear's for shoreliners, but also try to set up at the mouths
of the Petaluma or Napa Rivers, or even along Sonoma Creek. They
are on the move but not setting any track records to get there.
Closest action recently has been in Montezuma Slough, at the old red barn
public area. Salmon roe is the current rage.
PERCH:
Black perch are scattered throughout the rocky shorelines and pier pilings
all around the Bay. Beginning the incoming tide would be a preferred
approach. Pile worms and grass shrimp are good. Other species
are a little less evident this week.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: No change except slowed down by weaker tides and colder weather.
Leopard sharks on the Marin side of San Pablo Bay have been hitting mudsuckers
and midshipman. Kingfish are in San Pablo Bay, too.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants at Shadow Cliffs, Chabot, and Del Valle. Cold
rainy weather has been beneficial. The water might be murky but it's
deep, and trout are responding nicely to the mixed fare of nightcrawlers,
marshmallows, salmon eggs, cheese, and good old PowerBait (try fluorescent
colors in orange and chartreuse). You can also try Panther Martins.
Silver Fox, or similar spinners. Black bass are deep and somewhat
torpid but will hit nightcrawlers and plastic worms, possibly buzzbaits;
and some anglers are resorting to liver with a little success.
Catfish are sluggish, panfish elusive.
DELTA RUMORS:
Go deep or forget about it. The winds have been really awful.
December is normally a classic period for Delta stripers, yet the first
week of this month has been uninspiring. Plugging is a fool's errand, and
the crabs will get your bait, so know this in advance. You can get
striped bass if you use live bait and are willing to sacrifice most of
it. But if it gets you a keeper, so what? Pretty much the same
situation for sturgeon from the shore, though the swift and deep channels
are always a good prospect. And there are always catfish ready to
fill your bucket. Shrimp and clams are good baits right now.
