THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
                            {http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}

 Summary:  Moderate tides this week and no minus tides until Wednesday 5/31.  This adds up to good halibut angling conditions.  They are finally entering the Bay in better sizes and now would be the time to start working Berkeley Pier.  Winds are still bad after 11am but you can't have everything.

STRIPED BASS: The best striper fishing is over on the other side of the Bay.  Some fine action is happening at the Petaluma Bridge, Richardson Bridge (both on Highway 101), and Tiburon.  Pluggers are getting some fish near Loch Lomond and San Quentin Point. Also a good Hair Raiser bite at Oyster Point going on.  On the beach there is some good plugging down as far as Montara.  The best strategy is to get ahead of the latest rumor or hot report and catch the fish that have moved further along towards the sea.  For that reason, either end of the Golden Gate might be a good choice these days.

STURGEON: Best chance for a diamondback is in the Napa River at the Highway 37 bridge, using ghost shrimp.

PERCH:  Slow most places, but Tiburon, Sausalito, and Fort Baker have been productive.  In the East Bay, patience will be rewarded if you travel along the rocks from Emeryville to Richmond.  Pick a decent tide and use pile worms.  The beaches have been strangely uninspiring of late.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  More keeper sized halibut have begun wandering over the Berkeley Flats.  Boaters are having most of the luck but shoreliners should start concentrating on the flatfish now.  Berkeley Pier is the traditional favorite location, but also work the rocks along the Marina.  Other spots to consider are Alameda at the rockwall and Richmond at the end of the rockwall at Marina Bay.  Live bait like shiners or anchovies will do it, but so will lures like Fish Traps, Rat-L-Traps, Kastmasters, and even Hair Raisers tipped with anchovy filets.  Leopard and seven gill sharks are in the Bay in fair sizes.  They will hit pile worms and fish baits.  Bat rays are all over the place, some in enormous sizes.  Test your gear on a Mud Marlin today!

FRESHWATER: Trout plants in the following lakes: San Pablo , Lafayette, Chabot, Shadow Cliffs,  and Del Valle.  Nightcrawler-marshmallow combos and orange, green, and chartreuse PowerBait continue to be effective. The big trout are holding steady in water between 10-15 feet deep.    Best fishing times, especially in Marin, are at dawn and dusk.  Catfish, panfish, and bass are all rated fair to good.  Use typical smelly baits for the cats, red worms and minnows for the panfish, and nightcrawlers and plastic worms for the bass.

DELTA RUMORS: Striped bass fishing slowed down because of weird weather changes and the summer winds.  Rains, dam releases, and sudden hot temperatures all contributed to strange, slow fishing conditions.  Most of the stripers remain in the Sacramento River system from Isleton down to Sherman Island.  Pile worms, blood worms, sardines, and Rebel lures are what anglers in the Delta have used successfully in the past week.  Catfishing holds steady.  Panfish have turned on because of the hot weather and are getting caught in respectable sizes.  The best fishing is along the back sloughs off of Highway 4.  Black bass fishing is excellent early mornings or at nightfall.  Buzzbaits and Brushhogs work the best along the weeds.
