THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
                      {http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}

 Summary:  For the second week in a row, the Delta is red hot.  The water is good and the fish are active.  Winds are a problem, but that's not exactly news.  The only place to avoid the winds is on the beach, going after perch and possibly flatfish.  But if you can get out early and beat the breeze, the fishing locally can be pretty good.

STRIPED BASS: The best Bay Area striped bass fishing now is between Point Richmond and Emeryville, with Butler's Beach, Point Isabel, Golden Gate Fields, and Ashby/Frontage Road being the most productive spots.  Pile worms and anchovies are the top baits.  Fish Traps are the top lures.  There are stripers in San Pablo Bay but the mitten crabs steal the bait before the bass can find it.  Not worth the effort unless you can find some fast water.

STURGEON:  Mitten crabs are so bad that shoreline fishing for sturgeon is difficult from San Pablo Bay past the Carquinez Strait.  San Quentin Point is a possibility.  So is Martinez, along the railroad tracks.  Ghost shrimp is the best bait.

PERCH: Most perch species are spawning now.  Pile worms and ghost shrimp are top baits from the Oakland Estuary all the way to Richmond.  Berkeley Pier and the marina rocks are good spots for black, pile, and white perch.  The surf is an excellent place for redtail, calico,  and silver perch from Ocean Beach up through Bodega Bay.  Plastic grubs are also working fine.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Halibut are inside the San Francisco Bay, mostly heading towards South Bay.  Sharks are around, not large and not frequent,  caught more where San Pablo and San Francisco bays meet.  Bat rays are on this side of the Golden gate.  Jacksmelt and kingfish are in both bays but not in great numbers.

FRESHWATER: Trout plants in the following lakes:  San Pablo, Lafayette, Chabot, Contra Loma, Shadow Cliffs, and Del Valle.  Take along Power Baits (rainbow and chartreuse in glitter), night crawlers, and marshmallows.  All these plants of the last month or so, plus the good weather, have added up to good fishing.  For black bass, spinner baits, crankbaits, and plastics are all working.  Catfish are taking fish baits and worms.

DELTA RUMORS:  Striped bass fishing continues to be excellent as the stripers begin moving down river.  Males are full of milt and are aggressive.  The water is clear and lures like Rat-L-Traps and Rebels are working well.  Sardines, blood worms, and pile worms are the best baits.  In North Delta the stripers are biting all long the Sacramento River from Rio Vista down past Sherman Island.  Also check the Mokelumne River and the connected sloughs.  South Delta has stripers at Bacon Island and Stockton.  Black bass fishing has taken off all over the Delta.  White or chartreuse spinner baits are good, and crayfish-style crankbaits are even better.  Catfishing is very good just about anywhere on mackerels.  The Delta is the best bet right now with good weather and great fishing.
