THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}
Summary: Fishing has picked up considerably despite all the rain. The challenge is in being in the right place at the right time. If you chase rumors you may arrive too late. Follow the tides and fish accordingly.
STRIPED BASS:
Right now is a good time to fish for stripers! Ashby/Frontage Road is working
for pile worms and anchovies. so is the China Camp area on the same
baits. Also, Point Pinole, with both baits and plugs. The incoming
tide is best in all three spots.
STURGEON: Best
spots for shoreliners in San Pablo Bay are on the China Camp side or where
the Petaluma River empties into the bay. Pile worms are doing the
job. Grass shrimp is hard to come by due to weather and freshwater
runoff.
PERCH: Some
barred perch at Marina Bay on pile worms and blood worms. Otherwise
perch are hard to find. Try the Richmond Inner Harbor for smallish
pogies. The surf remains too rough for beach fishing most of the
time. But they are out there.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: Rumors of halibut persist, though most are unsubstantiated.
Anchovies and pile worms have picked up a few in the past week, from Emeryville
to the Berkeley Marina. Flounder are located from the East Bay to
San Pablo Bay and are hitting blood worms and pile worms. Kingfish
are around on the lower part of the tide and will hit anything, especially
cut anchovies.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants in the following lakes: San Pablo, Contra Loma, Chabot,
Temescal, Del Valle, and Shadow Cliffs. Big combination for
both trout and black bass seems to be nightcrawlers and marshmallows.
Orange and chartreuse Power Bait has also been effective for trout.
Not much luck with lures in murky water, but spinners and Kastmasters have
had their share of success. Catfish continue to hit the usual baits,
though some odd luck has been reported on beef liver and, in the case of
a nice channel catfish out of San Pablo, shrimp.
DELTA RUMORS:
Another so-so week for the Delta. The water is still running fast
and full of muck. Sturgeon fishermen are using ghost shrimp and pile
worm combinations from Cache Slough down to Sherman Island. Sardines,
mackerel, and clams are attracting catfish all over the southern sloughs.
Catfish are getting ready to spawn and are close to the banks in shallow
water. Striped bass and black bass action is poor to fair.
