THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary: While the wind rages in the Bay/Delta system, the Ocean has been remarkably calm. That's the good news. The bad news is that there is so much kelp and seaweed clotted together near shore that you will get a sore arm reeling it all in. Some severe tides are imminent this week and that will kill what is already a disappointing halibut bite for shoreliners. So turn your attention to striped bass ands lures, especially on the beaches.
STRIPED BASS: The stripers have begun moving away from the rock piles and are passing through the Golden gate, with the best action at the South tower. Hair Raisers would be a good choice off of Fort Point. Now is the time to hit the beaches from Baker all the way down past Pacifica. If the conditions hold the plugging could be excellent on the surf. Some keepers are being caught at Ashby/Frontage Road and Point Molate. Pile worms and blood worms, if you can find them, have been the best baits. But there are a lot of junk fish in the mix.
STURGEON: No change. The best chance of getting a nice summer diamondback is in the Napa River near the Highway 37 bridge.
PERCH: There are some large barred perch close in at Bolinas Bay down to Muir Beach. Unfortunately there is also a lot of thick clumps of seaweed to contend with on every cast. Sausalito might be the best place to go after perch. It's slow in the East Bay unless you find the right tide and not much wind
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Halibut are so-so, same as always, from the shore. Still smallish on the Berkeley Pier. Better prospects for keepers are in Oyster Point right now. Jacksmelt come and go with the tides. Bat rays remain the most likely to take your bait and you can encounter them from Emeryville through Richmond all the way past Point Molate. Shark action is quiet.
FRESHWATER: Trout plants in the following lakes: San Pablo, Chabot, Shadow Cliffs, and Del Valle. PowerBait is picking up some trout at dawn and dusk, but nothing to get excited about. Catfishing is better on a variety of baits, including chicken livers, night crawlers, wax worms, clams, prawns and fishy baits. There are so many people fishing Nicasio Reservoir it looks like a Flea Market. They are going for crappie and catching them mostly on mini jigs. The crappie are only fair sized but plentiful.
DELTA RUMORS:
Summer Doldrums is the pet phrase of Delta folks. The stripers are
small and unexciting. Black bass fishing is fair early mornings on
plastic worms and tube baits. Best largemouth action is at Georgiana
Slough. Live minnows are the ticket for decent sizes in panfish.
Catfishing is the top prospect and it has been very good in South Delta
from Whsiky Slough to Bacon Island. Some large channel cats are taking
live baits, either minnows or mudsuckers.
