THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}
Summary: We got the mellow tides
but we also got the heat wave, and that killed the bite pretty much for
several days. Things are improving and there is good fishing ahead
when the wind cooperates. The water looks good and the tides are
still ideal for both halibut and striped bass.
STRIPED BASS:
The stripers are still hanging around Suisun Bay, but a good number have
moved towards the sea and are getting caught at the Brothers Islands and
the Rockpile by boaters. For shoreliners that means Point Molate,
San Quentin Point, Tiburon, Fort Baker, Fort Point, and Baker Beach.
There have been some 5 pounders caught around the Berkeley Marina on live
shiners and shiner-type lures.
STURGEON:
Not much information to go on recently. Suisun Bay has been the most
productive area, especially at the Mothball Fleet, but there should be
something going on from San Pablo Bay through the Carquinez Strait.
PERCH: Every day seems different. Black perch have been schooling in large sizes around the Berkeley Marina, but you have to be there at the right time, usually just after the top of the tide. Or work the rocks from Emeryville to Richmond before and after the top of the tide. Some redtail and striped perch have been caught off the seashore.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: Halibut continue to catch anglers on the Berkeley Pier.
For every twenty fishermen there are about two or three halibut, and out
of that maybe one that's legal sized. Mornings and afternoons have
been best, with live shiner perch the bait--when you can find them.
There was a nice 32" white sea bass caught on a live anchovy there this
week. Soupfin sharks have been caught on the old pier pilings and
are around, so be prepared for a fight. Bat rays have slowed down
along with other species.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants in the following lakes: San Pablo, Lafayette, Chabot, Shadow
Cliffs, Contra Loma and Del Valle. Fishing is very slow due to the
weather. Try PowerBaits for trout, chicken livers and anchovies for
catfish, plastic worms for black bass, red worms for panfish.
DELTA RUMORS:
It's so bad that even the bait shops are calling it lousy. Hot searing
days when the wind isn't pounding, sticky muggy nights otherwise.
The catfish have been pretty disinterested, the stripers are gone except
for the little guys, black bass have moved well off the shore except in
the early morning. Not much reason to go unless you like a few bluegills
and crappie--and jet skiers.
