THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

                                    {http://songslinger.virtualave.net/fishing.html}

 Summary:  We will get a sixty reprieve from the minus tides this time around.  That should clear up the water nicely and help the halibut situation.  But probably not the sizes.  This is the year of the small flatfish.

STRIPED BASS:  It hasn't been a good week for stripers due to the minus tides and winds.  Best bets would be from South Tower to Ocean Beach, San Quentin Point, and Ashby/Frontage Road.  Or head up to Sherman Island and try for one of the monsters coming out of the Delta.

STURGEON:  Some boaters have had luck at the mouth of the Montezuma Slough on grass shrimp recently.  Try the bridge off of Grizzly Island Road or stick with the Napa River from Vallejo past Highway 37.  Or fish San Pablo Reservoir, where a nice one was taken last week.

PERCH:  Dismal except at the top of the tide when the wind is down, and that isn't happening too much.  Should improve this week along the rocks.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Extreme tides made for some lousy halibut fishing recently.  Rays are still around.  Sharks seem to have moved into San Pablo Bay.  Kingfish are all over.

FRESHWATER: Trout plant at San Pablo Reservoir.  Catfish plants in the following lakes: San Pablo, Chabot, Contra Loma, Shadow Cliffs, and Del Valle.  Trout action is spotty with a few taken on PowerBait and worms.  Most of the action is concentrated on catfish with cut baits doing the best work.  San Pablo Reservoir has had excellent catfish angling.  And one nice sturgeon in the mix.  Elsewhere panfishing is a steady but small yield.

DELTA RUMORS: The wind has been terrible lately.  Those who are getting out to fish aren't catching much besides small stripers and panfish.  Black bass have moved well off the banks and will take black plastic worms at dawn.  It's all about catfish in the back sloughs these days on the usual baits.  One hopeful sign, however: the big spawned out striped bass are moving through Sherman Island now on both the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers.  The water is deep enough so the wind only affects the angler, and now might be the time to go after one of those 20# stripers.  Butterflied shad, sardines, and even pile worms could be the ticket.
