THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT

                     {http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}

 Summary:  The rain never materialized and the fishing did not improve over the last week.  At least, that's the case for the Bay Area.  The Pacific and the Delta have quite a bit to offer these days.  Now that the holidays are over and the roads are clearer it's a good time to drive to the Coast or the Central Valley and catch some perch or stripers.

STRIPED BASS:  Hard to find stripers from shore down river from Pittsburg, but some success has occurred along the Napa River north of Highway 37.  Otherwise it's best to hit the Delta.

STURGEON: Fishing has slowed down by the Sturgeon Triangle.  Still some good fishing near the mouth of the Napa River, Suisun Bay, and up to Cache Slough in the Delta.  Some luck reported at Alameda.  Martinez has some diamondbacks caught near the pier.  Herring filets are a good bait now, but we're still waiting for the herring spawn--and some rain.

PERCH: Very good fishing on the surf from Pacifica all the way to Bodega bay and beyond.  Now is the time to take advantage of the calm weather and catch redtail, calico, barred, silver, and walleyed perch on pile worms, blood worms, mussels, and grass shrimp.  Good fishing reported near Sausalito, but nothing much at Fort Baker lately.  East Bay fishing hasn't been all that great but should improve with better tides this week.

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES:  Flounder from San Pablo Bay up to Sherman Island on shrimp baits.  Kingfish are everywhere.

FRESHWATER: Trout plants in the following lakes: Chabot, Del Valle, Shadow Cliffs, Contra Loma, Temescal,  Lafayette, and Bon Tempe.  Striped bass are big at Contra Loma; trout fishing is good at Temescal and Chabot; catfishing remains good at Lafayette.   Plugs for stripers powerbaits for trout, nightcrawlers and chicken livers for catfish.

DELTA RUMORS:  Action has definitely picked up on both sides of Sherman Island, especially on the San Joaquin side.  Also good fishing through Streamboat Slough in the north and down to Old River in the south.  Bait is the usual: shad, mudsuckers, and cut bait.  Lots of small shakers in between, but there are some large ones out there.  Sturgeon are consistent at Cache Slough and Sherman Island.  Shrimp baits are the most effective.  Black bass are hitting plugs and worms close to the rocks all over the north.  Bluegills and crappies are good by boat docks and tules on red worms, wax worms, and minnows.   Catfishing is best in the waters around Bethel Island on typical baits.
