THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}
Summary: The Fall Run may be on for striped bass but they are taking their time moving upriver. One reason for that is the abundance of bait from San Pablo Bay to Suisun Bay. Now is the time to fish with lures if you never have before; you'll enjoy the results.
STRIPED BASS: Point Molate has been good again, especially for those throwing Hair Raisers, Rat-L-Traps, and Kastmasters, in about that order. Another choice for Hair Raisers is San Quentin Point on the outgoing tide. Golden Gate Fields is also good on Kastmasters in the early evening. From Ashby/Frontage Road to Richmond, bait fishing has produced about one striper per day, and that's it. Point Pinole is still a decent possibility for bait on the pier and either side, and plugging Kastmasters on the left side of the pier. Also some keepers being taken at Eckley Pier in Crockett on pile worms, anchovies, and grass shrimp.
STURGEON: Fishing is slow for diamondbacks from the shore. Try Port Costa, Vallejo, or upriver at Montezuma Slough (off of Grizzly Island Road out of Fairfield). Any time now.
PERCH: Berkeley Marina is good for black perch on pile worms at the last hour of the incoming tide to about the first hour of the outgoing. Sausalito remains an excellent choice for large black, striped, pile, and the occasional rubberlip perch on worms and grass shrimp. By the sea, things are very good between Muir Beach and Slide Ranch for large striped perch.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: As soon as the incoming tide peaks, there are plenty of jacksmelt around from Ashby/Frontage Road all the way to Richmond. Anchovies and pile worms will work just fine. Nice action on Salmon with Mepps spinners at the Rodeo "hotwater" area and also at Benica, but it comes and goes.
FRESHWATER: Trout plants in the following lakes: San Pablo, Del Valle, Contra Loma Chabot, and Shadow Cliffs. Everybody keeps saying that the fishing will improve once the cooler fall patterns set in, but it's been so hot lately that the bite is slow. Deep waters early in the morning has been the most successful strategy for trout on chratreuse powerbait and nightcrawlers. Some luck reported with artificials, especially Rapalas and small Kastmasters. Catfishing is still fair to good.
DELTA RUMORS:
There are a lot of shad in the Delta right now, and while that's a good
sign for striper fishing, the striped bass themselves are slow to head
upriver. The bait's still pretty good below Suisun Bay, for one good
reason. The best chance of catching a keeper is along the Sacramento
River between Sherman Island and Isleton, using live mudsuckers and shad,
or cut baits like anchovies and sardines. In South Delta, there are
schoolies all along the San Joaquin River where it becomes Old River.
Catfishing is the top prospect in both the north and south on stinkbaits,
cut fish baits, and clams. Just don't expect big ones right now.
Panfishing is slow. Black bass fishing is fair.
