THE WEEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
{http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}
Summary: Weird La Nina weather
continues to confound the trends. Cold and windy days and funky tides,
lots of crabs--all have contributed to so-so fishing. And suddenly
there is a warm spell and high pressure. But will it last long enough
to unlock the fish jaws? The winter is exactly like last year, starting
out very dryly. We need rain.
STRIPED BASS:
Carquinez Strait remains consistent: lots of small shakers and the occasional
large striper. But that's better than anywhere else nearby.
STURGEON: Waiting
for the rain. Some catches from Cache Slough, Sherman Island, Montezuma
Slough, Martinez, Napa, and China Camp--but nothing like a run. Sporadic
at best.
PERCH: Much
better than it has been. Fort Point has seen some good activity in
pile perch and rubberlips on pile worms and grass shrimp. The beaches
have started contributing redtail perch so long as the surf remains reasonable.
No storms for a while and that will help. East Bay perch fishing
is okay with the best spots being Alameda, either sandy shore or rockwalls.
MISCELLANEOUS
SPECIES: Flounder in San Pablo Bay, kingfish in both bays.
But not a lot of either.
FRESHWATER:
Trout plants in the following lakes: Shadow Cliffs, Contra Loma, and Lafayette.
Double-bait setups seem to be producing the best results for trout.
Use powerbait on one hook, nightcrawlers on the other. Fishing is
moderate at best, except for Del Valle where the action is steady.
DELTA RUMORS:
The cold spell last week really slowed down the shoreline bite. Action
shifted from the Sacramento system to the San Joaquin, especially south
to Stockton. Old River and Bacon Island are the best spots for stripers
on fish baits. North Delta is fair for both stripers and sturgeon
but will change as soon as it rains. No word on catfish or black
bass.
