THE WE ZXCEKLY SHORELINER'S REPORT
(Friday,4/16/99) {http://members.xoom.com/songslinger/fishing.html}Summary: So far, April has been pretty awful. Harsh winds, dirty water, sluggish tides, cold weather, and many different kinds of crab. Any one of these features would be enough for lackluster fishing--and we got them all together! The recent warming hasn't improved conditions much in the Bay System, but it will produce some changes in the Delta when it triggers the striped bass spawn. Already stripers are beginning to congregate in large schools in the north and south tributaries of the Sacramento/San Joaquin rivers.
STRIPED BASS: Very slow in the East Bay. Some spotty action in the Berkeley Marina, but most of the stripers have been caught on the other side of the bay, from San Quentin Point to Oyster Point. Some luck reported from the shore at China Camp. The Delta is still a better choice right now.
STURGEON: Nothing going on nearby. There are still a lot of sturgeon getting caught between Port Costa and Martinez, but mostly by boaters. China Camp is also a possibility.
PERCH: Still catching a few barred perch on blood worms between Emeryville and Richmond, but that's about it. The good news is that shiner perch are back at the Berkeley Pier. Black perch are hiding, except for small ones that must have been last year's babies. You can find them at Fort Baker. Some striped and rubberlipped perch have been caught at Fort Point recently. The ocean surf was too rough to fish this past week.
FLATFISH: Flounder have been too small to keep lately. Halibut are coming into the bay slowly but surely. A few anglers have caught them from boats along the Berkeley Flats. Shiners are biting at the Berkeley Pier and this bodes well for future halibut fishing. Right now, however, no one's getting any of the big 'butts yet. Some lucky shoreliners have landed halibuts from the beaches just outside the Golden Gate on cut baits.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIES: Kingfish can be found during the low tide at the end of Berkeley Pier and at Point Richmond. Anchovies work well. Smelt have been caught at Berkeley Pier during the incoming tide on pile worms and at Butlers' Beach on the outgoing tide with anchovies. Bat rays are at Berkeley Pier and Point Isabel, and all over this side of the bay. All baits will catch them, especially cut anchovies.
FRESHWATER: Trout plants at the following lakes: Contra Loma, Lafayette, Temescal, San Pablo, Chabot, Shadow Cliffs, Del Valle, Phoenix and Lagunitas. Very good trout fishing right now, mostly on power baits, but also from small lures like Kastmasters and spinners.
DELTA RUMORS: The warm weather is triggering the striped bass spawn. In the North Delta, every kind of bait seems to be working from the Mokelumne River down to Sherman Island for stripers in the 5-pound range. Pile worms, blood worms, grass shrimp, and frozen shad are all successful. Almost the same in the South Delta, though pile worms are the top producers for shoreliners. Old River, Middle River, and the San Joaquin River south of Stockton are the best spots right now. Catfish are still biting, though not as much as during the spawn. Crappie fishing is fair but should improve during the hot spell. Not much going on with sturgeon except at the power lines on the Sacramento River side of Sherman Island, where grass shrimp is getting the occasional keeper diamondback.
